HAIR IS HERITAGE-

Hair is Heritage was a photoshoot created for the social team to use on our Measure Instagram account. The purpose of the shoot was to celebrate and honor Black History Month by highlighting a prominent and meaningful aspect of Black culture, hair.
For this project, we intentionally avoided overhead lighting and instead used side lighting from both the left and right. This approach created strong contrast and emphasized certain features, resulting in a dramatic and visually striking aesthetic.
One challenge we encountered was a lack of props during the shoot. Rather than compromising the composition, I resolved this by incorporating objects during post-production. Using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, I was able to seamlessly add elements and refine the images, ensuring a polished final result.
STUDY ABROAD DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 1-
During my semester abroad in Florence, Italy, I enrolled in Digital Photography I, a course that unexpectedly sparked my passion for photography and has since become a cornerstone of my creative journey. Prior to this experience, photography had never been a primary interest of mine. However, this immersive class introduced me to both the technical and artistic dimensions of the medium, opening up a new world of creative expression. The course offered a comprehensive foundation in digital photography, from mastering camera settings and manual controls to learning how to manipulate light and composition for specific visual outcomes. Each week, we were challenged with themed assignments requiring a minimum of ten photographs, encouraging both technical precision and creative exploration.
What made the course truly unique was its experiential approach: every class included two-hour photo excursions around Florence. These outings provided hands-on opportunities to capture a wide variety of subjects, including portraits, street scenes, landscapes, architecture, and live models, while navigating the vibrant streets of the city. After each shoot, we returned to the lab to digitally edit our photos.
In addition to digital techniques, the course also offered a glimpse into traditional photographic processes. We learned how to develop images in a darkroom and created alternative prints like cyanotypes, blending modern and historical practices. This class not only taught me to think more critically and creatively through the lens, but it also pushed me out of my comfort zone, encouraging solo exploration, personal growth, and a deeper appreciation for visual storytelling. The software’s used primarily were Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge.
FRUITFUL MOMENTS-
Fruitful Moments was a project created for my Digital Photography II course during the first semester of my junior year. The goal of the assignment was to capture something that inspires you to continue creating.
As an artist, I began my senior year of high school working primarily with acrylic paint. As a beginner, I often painted fruit to better understand key fundamentals such as lighting, shadow, contrast, and exposure. Repetition played an important role in developing these skills, allowing me to fully grasp their importance and how to apply them effectively in my work.
For this photography project, I revisited that early inspiration by capturing images of the same subject matter—fruit. The setup included a white bedsheet as a backdrop and a mirror placed underneath to create a reflective, almost surreal effect. I used a cool-toned desk lamp positioned overhead to enhance the highlights and create a brighter, more defined exposure.
